“Avatar” Film Reflection

1.) Where in the film do you see critiques evident of the current state of the world in the characters, dialogue and content of the film?

In the film, critiques that were evident about the current state of the world were portrayed by the characters, the dialogue and the content of the film. The characters portrayed the current state of the world through their way of life, for the “Sky People” for example they mirrored the possible future of our race here in the world if we continue to neglect the negative conditions we are applying to our environment. Moreover, the Na’vi people on the other hand live in harmony with nature and as we have seen in the film, they are actually quite peaceful and are at rest because of such. As for the dialogue and content of the film they too portray the two sides of humanity, the one that just wants to make a fortune with the expense of destroying the environment and the other side which shows how humans can be peaceful and live harmoniously with nature. This only shows that more problems will only come if we don’t open our eyes to realities that are happening in our world today.

2.) Describe the transformation that takes place in Jake from the beginning of the movie until the end. What are some of the key turning points that you can identify in his encounter with the Na’vi people?

In the movie Jake transformed from a “jar head” nobody to an avatar driving marine that would shape the faith of Pandora. The first time he saw Neytiri in the forest was the first time he had a sudden change of heart-a deeper understanding on the way life goes through a being then back to Eywa their goddess. And the most significant part of Jake’s transformation was when he was with the Na’vi people, he learned the ways of the people as they treat him like their own. Through this process he gained love for the people, the nature and Neytiri as well. And because of this love, he turned away from his true mission and this was to destroy hometree and leave the Na’vi people homeless.

3.)  The role of choice and the act of choosing are both significant activities for the Na’vi people. Why is choice so critical and what is its significance for the moral life?

The simple act of choosing is a privilege we humans have and this is also what being free constitutes. But, given this freedom we should always consider what consequences our choices could bear. In the film choice was a very crucial part of the story, because of what the Na’vi believe in they chose to stand their ground and fight for what is theirs considering the possible loses of the conflict. They still chose the harsh path because they believe this is for the greater good and when comparing the choices in the film in life and specifically moral life some decisions we will be making in the future might not be good to us but it would be good for other people, maybe a whole lot more. But we must always choose what is the best choice, the one that would do good to you and to others as well without putting anyone in jeopardy. That is how we choose intellectually, we must consider all factors that may affect the decision, especially the moral side as we would become future doctors.
